A cut down and modified Mosin Nagant, also know and an Obrez.
After the second world war, there were literally millions of surplus rifles lying around eastern Europe. Many of these inevitably made their way into the hands of criminals, thugs and revolutionaries, who adapted them for their own needs.
The obrez was used out of necessity. A gang-lord might need someone dead, but a full length bolt action rifle is not exactly a very concealable weapon, so they were cut down to make them more manageable.
The Obrez still fires a full battle rifle sized cartridge though, and because of the massive round used (7.62x53mm, a similar size to rounds used only in heavy machine guns in modern armies) and the short barrel, the Obrez is well known for not only being able to punch a fist sized hole into a mans chest, but also set his clothes on fire from the huge muzzle flash.
The Obrez was used extensively by Chechen rebels because of limited access to better weapons at the beggining of the insurgency.
