An Loc in 1972. In early April of that year An Loc was surrounded by close to 6 Divisions of NVA, all with the latest Russian-built equipment and fought for three months for their survival. It was mostly U.S. Air Power that held the enemy off, but the ARVN fought well too. There was a handful of about 10 U.S. Advisers on the ground directing much of the battle. During the battle the town was receiving 6,000 to 9,000 rounds a day of enemy incoming artillery, rockets and mortars. By the end, the NVA had suffered a humiliating defeat losing almost all the soldiers in 4 1/2 Divisions. Countless numbers of main battle tanks, track-mounted anti-aircraft and other armored vehicles were destroyed by the relentless U.S Air effort.
